Description
We have been tenants for 11 years (2010 - 2021). Current landlords have owned the house since 2012. We have been exemplary tenants -always paying rent in full and on time (even through job reductions during COVID), helped with snow shovelling and taking out garbage and recycling every week.
Current landlords lived on main floor for their first 4 years (2012 - 2016) and moved (bought a semi-detached house) when starting their family and during her first pregnancy.
February 2021: Our landlord calls us and says they need to reclaim our apartment because it is the biggest (2 bedroom top floor) to move into while they renovate their primary residence. At this point, they are two adults with two children (5 and 1 years old) and with a third on the way (due in September).
We suspect this is in bad faith. As rents have gone up considerably in the Junction Triangle. We paid $1500 including utilities for our space. We could not even get a 1 bedroom basement for the same price now. Also, our landlords rented the 1 bedroom basement in December 2020 for $1400. We suspected they would try to do something to get us out.
We found a suitable sublet for a year and have decided to move because living here has become stressful. Also, the sublet has turned out to be a good option as it is with a friend and buys us time before looking for something longterm.
We were issued the eviction notice during Toronto's stay-at-home order and 3rd wave of Covid.
