Description

My mother, who was in her early 70s, had been living at this address for about six years. She initially lived on the ground floor but moved into a larger unit on the second floor with her son and his partner when it became available, as she was becoming less able to take care of herself.

We payed $2750 a month for the larger, three bedroom unit.

In April 2019, the landlord told my mother that we had to vacate the unit in June 2019, because he was planning to move in himself.

My mother, being elderly and not in great health, decided not to fight it and tried to accommodate the landlord. My mother begged for an extra month, and the landlord begrudgingly accepted.

The landlord refused to provide the N12 form until we requested it, giving us less than 60 days to move out. Since we were never provided notice, we were unsure if he would let us stay until July.

The landlord would have contractors enter the apartment without our knowledge or consent prior to eviction.

The landlord refused to help us look for a new apartment, nor did he compensate us for an extra month's rent, which is required under an N12 eviction.

The landlord then tried to convince my mother that she owed him an extra month's rent. Instead of being compensated for an eviction, we were expected to PAY AN EXTRA MONTH'S RENT TO THE LANDLORD. Fortunately my mother had kept all her rent receipts and proved to the landlord that we did not owe him any money. Apparently the landlord had not kept any records of rent payment from his tenants.

Soon after being evicted and relocating to Ottawa in August 2019, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and died shortly before Christmas, 2019.

The landlord had forced my mother to spend the last year of her life fighting his greed and stupidity and worrying about finding shelter, instead of enjoying it with her children and grandchild or spending it travelling and visiting with family.
