Description
N11, not N12, so this was a legal eviction because I did eventually sign. Had I been served an N12 I doubt it would have been legal. I was able to get a financial settlement.
Circumstances:
Landlord told tenants we'd get to stay when he sold the building, then found a buyer who wanted the house empty. He agreed to sell it empty, and wanted me to leave in less than two months, but I've been evicted like this before and I wasn't going to let a landlord break the law with me again. I was able to stay until the last day of 2019 and received one year's rent to leave, otherwise I was fully prepared to take the landlord to court. They did pay me, after a huge headache, the full amount. A tenant's org and a journalist helped me for many months. I know I am lucky but I feel resentful, given Toronto's current market I will never have a home that nice again. I paid $950 for a bachelor with a balcony in the Annex. A condo was being built across the street.
