Our landlord had rented to us starting August 2016 as he was moving to Ottawa to attend school for a 2 year program. He informed us when his program was done he was unsure if he would stay in Ottawa, and either continue renting to us or sell the unit.

In late May 2018 we contacted our landlord after not hearing from him around his post-school decision. He said Ottawa was great and asked us to give another year of monthly post dated cheques to which we agreed, relieved with not having to move.

In late September 2018 our landlord contacted us to give two months notice as they would be returning to their unit. We challenged this but ultimately agreed as long as we received the one months rent compensation as outlined in the N12. Our landlord was very angry about this and conducted several unit inspections trying to find something to charge us for but ultimately it went nowhere and he paid the required amount on the last day of our tenancy.
